Homesteading Deer Creek's Way

The Heart Behind the Homestead

Rainbow over Deerk Creek Homestead

On this 25-acre property you will see a small farm and a dozen small cabins nestled in the heart of the Black Hills National Forest.  The idea of Deer Creek Homestead began long before Campfire Cabins was built. We started this journey with the hope of improving our family’s health with home grown foods, but we needed a way to financially support our hobby farm.  In 2017 we began to build rental cabins in the north pasture, while our homestead grew slowly in the southern pasture one season at a time. We planted gardens, raised our first animals, added goats, ducks, fruit trees, and a high tunnel, and learned through every challenge the land and weather sent our way. What started as a way to improve our family’s health slowly became a place filled with purpose, hard work, and a whole lot of heart.

As Campfire Cabins grew and we began hosting more guests, we discovered how much families wanted to be part of the homestead too.  Kids asked to collect eggs, meet the animals, peek inside the high tunnel, and help with evening chores. Sharing this place became one of the most meaningful parts of what we do, and the homestead has grown into an experience we love inviting others into.

Today Deer Creek Homestead is a small, lively operation focused on healthy soil, happy animals, and simple living, and it has become a place we love sharing with the families who stay with us.

Life at Our Homestead

Man bottle feeding a calf

Life at Deer Creek is built on steady work that supports the land, animals, and people who live here. Each part of the homestead has a purpose, and the animals provide food, compost, and care for the land. The gardens and high tunnel offer reliable harvests, and the trees we manage help heat our home and cabins.

We are not a certified organic farm, but we farm as naturally as we can. There are no vaccines, antibiotics, growth hormones, synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides used here. Composting, cover cropping, and free ranging animals support the health of the soil, plants, trees, and wildlife. This creates a deep sense of pride in the food we raise and the land we tend.

Guests who spend time here can see how each part of the homestead works together and how much intention goes into every task. Our shop offers goods and produce made through this same thoughtful process, giving families a chance to take home a piece of what we grow.
